How to Hide from Yourself?

In the game of hide-and-seek, what kind of experience or feeling would be created if a single player played both the role of the hider and the seeker at the same time?

Following the familiar game of "hide-and-seek," the intention of this project is to have participants think about the strangeness of self-awareness by intentionally confusing their own spatial awareness through a vision that fuses images by utilizing Virtual Reality (VR) technology.

Participants move around in a space where physical obstacles are placed. In a situation where they avoid being seen by themselves through the extracorporeal viewpoint, which is different from their own flesh-and-blood perspective, the boundary between observer and observed must blur as a result. The dynamics of this work as a game is a complex process of integrating and harmonizing both one's self-awareness of one's own body being here and now and one's appearance from an external viewpoint.

Ultimately, by dividing one's physical self into multiple self-recognitions, new realms for play might be created. This work explores the basic mechanisms underlying the question: What is it like to be unified consciousness existing in space and time?



「かくれんぼ」という遊びにおいて、一人のプレーヤーが隠れる側と探す側の両方を演じるとしたらどのような体験や体感が生まれるだろうか。

「かくれんぼ」という誰もが知っているゲームを踏襲し、VRの技術を活用して映像と現実を融合した視界を通して自己の空間認識を意図的に混乱させながら、自己認識の不思議さについて考えてもらうことを意図している。

参加者は物理的な障害物が配置された空間を動き回る。自分の生身の視点とは違うカメラの視点を通して自分に見られることを避けるという状況の中で、観察者と被観察者の境界が結果として曖昧にならざるをえない。 この作品のゲームとしてのダイナミクスは、自分の身体がいまここにあるという自己認識と外部のカメラ視点からの自分の姿、その両方を統合し、調和させる複雑なプロセスなのである。

本作品は、今後技術によって拡張されていくであろう自己認識について、表現と体験デザインの領域においても重要な意味を持つのではないだろうか。また、認知・知覚体験をデザインするという行為がどのように体験の設計を生み出しうるのかという問いも含まれている。

究極的には、自分の身体的な自己を複数に分割することによって、何か新しい遊びの空間を作ることができるかもしれない。この作品は自己認識という古典的な問いの根底にある基本的なメカニズムを探求し、アップデートすることを目指しているのである。
